All About Our School
Gonsalves Elementary School is named after Joe A. Gonsalves, a very prominent community member. Mr. Gonsalves was a city councilman, the mayor of Dairy Valley, and a highly respected assemblyman of the 66th District (Cerritos area). Our school takes great pride in upholding his reputation for respect and responsibility. The school annually celebrates “Joe A. Gonsalves Day” in June, and Mr. Gonsalves graciously attended each year until his passing in 2000.
Joe A. Gonsalves Elementary School was built on a 10-acre site in the northeast section of Cerritos, California. It was formally dedicated on the 23rd of May in 1973. The school was originally constructed in an open-face design to permit maximum flexibility and team teaching. The school underwent extensive modernization during the summer of 2001 to meet rigid state requirements.
Gonsalves Elementary consists of grades Kindergarten through 6th Grade. The school has an enrollment of over 560 students. The average class size of grades K-3 is 20 and grades 4-6 is 32. All teachers are fully credentialed.
